SOPHA’s
Thematic School
« The Metaphysics
of Persons: Personal Identity, Free Will, Mind and Body »
Saint Jacut-de-la-mer (France, Côtes d’Armor), 13 june to 18
june 2011
Organiser : Cyrille Michon (vice president of the SOPHA,
Professor at Université de Nantes), supported by CNRS, Université de Nantes and
Université de Rennes 1.
The Thematic
School is intended for doctoral students and researchers, not necessarily
members of the SOPHA or the CNRS. It will comprise around twenty lectures and
workshops, concerning one or more of the three topics in the conference title.
The language will be mostly French, though some of the lectures will be in
English.
The School’s general theme will bring
together works from various domains of lively debate in contemporary philosophy:
the issue of Free Will, the criteria of Personal Identity, and the Mind-Body
Problem. Those questions can be addressed from a metaphysical standpoint, but
they also pertain to the grounding of moral responsibility, and require the use
of conceptual and logical tools, to which a few hours will be devoted. The
School will involve both classes and more participatory workshops, as well as
two Q&A sessions with Peter van Inwagen and Vincent Descombes.

materialism and free will
